Ages 6–7
First Grade Reading Level
First graders (ages 6–7) move from sounding out single words to reading short stories with growing fluency. This is the year reading really clicks.
What this level means
At a first grade reading level, kids know all letter sounds, blend consonant clusters, recognize 100+ sight words, and can read short early-reader books independently by the end of the year.
What to look for in books at this level
- Sentences of 5–10 words with simple punctuation
- Common word families (-at, -ing, -ake)
- Repetition + small surprises to build prediction skills
- Short chapter-style books with chapters of 1–2 pages
- Strong picture support that still requires reading the text
