Kindergarten Reading Level
Kindergartners (ages 5–6) are usually decoding their first words and falling in love with read-alouds. The "kindergarten reading level" covers early sight-word books and read-aloud picture books that build vocabulary.
What this level means
At a kindergarten reading level, kids typically know most letter sounds, can blend simple CVC words (cat, run, hop), and recognize 25–50 sight words by year-end. Reading is still mostly with an adult.
What to look for in books at this level
- Short, predictable sentences (3–6 words)
- High-frequency sight words (the, is, can, see)
- Picture-supported text — the illustration carries the story
- Repeating patterns kids can join in on
- Familiar topics: family, school, animals, feelings
