    Second Grade Reading Level

Second graders (ages 7–8) shift from learning to read into reading to learn. Vocabulary explodes, and chapter books become the new normal.

    What this level means

At a second grade reading level, kids decode multi-syllable words, read with expression, summarize what they’ve read, and handle 50–80 page chapter books with illustrations.

What to look for in books at this level

    • Chapter books with 5–10 page chapters
    • Generous illustrations to break up text
    • Series formats kids can binge for momentum
    • Story arcs with a clear problem and resolution
    • Mix of fiction and fact-based reading
