    The Lexile 200–300 range is where most kids land in late kindergarten and 1st grade. It bridges sight-word readers and short chapter-style books.

    What this level means

    A Lexile measure between 200L and 300L means a child can read text with very short sentences, common sight words, and strong picture support — with growing independence.

    What to look for in books at this level

    • Short, declarative sentences
    • High-frequency sight words throughout
    • Repeating patterns and predictable structures
    • Pictures that clarify any unfamiliar word
    • Stories no longer than 32 pages
